What is vehicle insurance in the UAE?

Vehicle insurance in the UAE — also referred to as motor insurance — is a legal contract between a vehicle owner and a CBUAE-licensed insurer that protects against financial loss from accidents, theft, fire, or damage. It applies to all registered motorised vehicles on UAE roads: private cars, SUVs, 4x4s, pickup trucks, electric vehicles, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles. Under UAE Federal Law No. 6 of 2007, every vehicle registered and driven on UAE roads must carry at minimum a valid third-party motor insurance policy. Comprehensive vehicle insurance extends this protection to cover your own vehicle as well — including damage from accidents, theft, fire, flooding, and other events. Policies can be enhanced with optional add-ons including off-road cover, GCC extension, roadside assistance, and agency repair.

Is vehicle insurance mandatory in the UAE?

Yes — vehicle insurance is mandatory for every motorised vehicle registered and driven in the UAE, regardless of emirate. This applies to cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles, electric vehicles, and pickup trucks. The requirement is established under UAE Federal Law No. 6 of 2007 and is enforced as a prerequisite for vehicle registration and annual renewal across all seven emirates. Regulatory authorities that enforce this requirement include the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, and Transport Authority in Ajman and other emirates. Driving without valid vehicle insurance — or with a lapsed policy — carries a fine of AED 500 and 4 black points on your licence. Authorities may also impound the vehicle. An expired policy is treated the same as no policy at all under UAE traffic law.

How much does vehicle insurance cost in the UAE?

Motor vehicle insurance premiums in the UAE depend on your vehicle type, its market value, your driving history, emirate of registration, and the coverage you select. The following figures represent typical starting prices for standard passenger vehicles registered in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and high-value cars may attract different rates.

Vehicle Type Starting Price Notes
Private car / sedan - TPL AED 551/year Minimum legal requirement
Private car / sedan Comprehensive  AED 1,129/year 2–3.5% of market value (CBUAE formula)
SUV / 4x4 - TPL AED 551/year Rate varies by vehicle value
SUV / 4x4 - Comprehensive AED 1,400/year Higher value = higher base premium
Electric vehicle (EV) - Comprehensive AED 1,200/year Battery damage cover availability varies by insurer
Pickup truck - Comprehensive  AED 1,100/year Commercial use affects premium

Factors that affect your vehicle insurance premium

  • Vehicle market value:

Comprehensive premiums are calculated at 2–3.5% of the vehicle's current market value under CBUAE guidelines. A higher-value SUV or EV will have a higher base premium than an older sedan.

  • Vehicle type and age:

Older vehicles attract lower comprehensive premiums due to reduced replacement value. Motorcycles and commercial vehicles are rated separately from private cars.

  • Driver age and history:

Drivers under 25 or over 70 typically pay higher premiums. A clean no-claims record can reduce renewal premiums by 5–25% depending on the insurer's no-claims bonus (NCB) programme.

  • Emirate of registration:

Dubai premiums run 5–10% higher than Abu Dhabi on average, reflecting higher traffic density and repair costs. All seven emirates are supported on Shory.

  • Add-ons selected:

Off-road cover, GCC extension, agency repair, roadside assistance, and rental car cover each add to the base premium. Adding these at quote stage shows the real total cost before you commit.

  • Voluntary excess (deductible):

Accepting a higher voluntary excess reduces your annual premium by roughly 8–15%. Choose an amount you could realistically pay at short notice — the excess applies to every claim, not once per year.

  • Excess (deductible): Choosing a higher voluntary excess lowers your annual premium. A AED 1,000 excess typically saves 8–15% on the base price.

Comparing vehicle insurance quotes online in the UAE helps you find the cheapest vehicle insurance price while ensuring you get the right level of coverage for your needs. With Shory, you can compare multiple insurers in one place and potentially save on your vehicle insurance premium within minutes.

Types of vehicle insurance in the UAE

Vehicle insurance in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and across the UAE typically falls into two main types: third-party vehicle insurance and comprehensive vehicle insurance. Understanding the difference between these options helps you choose the right level of coverage based on your needs, budget, and vehicle type.
