Mawaqif Abu Dhabi Parking 2026: Types, Fees and Payment Methods

Abu Dhabi parking has a reputation for being complicated. Most of the time it isn't. Mawaqif is the city's paid parking system, run by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) under the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT). Paid hours run Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to midnight. Standard zones are free on Sundays and public holidays.

Most questions come down to: which zone am I in, what's the right SMS code for my plate, and is today a free day? This guide covers those, and the less obvious stuff too — residential permits, airport rates, the full fines table, and what to do when your confirmation SMS doesn't arrive.

What is Mawaqif parking in Abu Dhabi?

Mawaqif (مواقف — Arabic for "parking") launched in 2009, when the ITC introduced it to manage parking across the emirate and reduce street congestion. It covers most major roads in Abu Dhabi city: Corniche Road, Hamdan Street, Khalifa Street, Electra Street, Tourist Club Area, Al Mushrif, Al Khalidiya, Mussafah, and beyond.

Parking inspectors patrol every Mawaqif zone. They issue fines, check tickets, and answer questions. Every zone is monitored — don't assume otherwise.

You can pay five ways: SMS to 3009, the app, Pay & Display machines, rechargeable cards, or the TAMM portal.

Mawaqif parking types and fees (2026)

Mawaqif splits Abu Dhabi's paid parking into two categories. Before you reach for your phone, look at the kerbstone — the painted edge of the bay. White and blue means Premium. Black and blue means Standard.

Premium parking

Premium bays are in the busiest parts of the city where turnover is high and space is short:

Four hours is the ceiling. No extensions past that point. At AED 3 per hour, a full stay costs AED 12. These spots are for short visits — an errand, a meeting, a lunch. Not somewhere to leave your car for the afternoon.

Standard parking

Standard zones sit in residential areas and less trafficked commercial streets outside the city centre. AED 2 per hour, or AED 15 flat for a full 24 hours. If you know you'll be parked for more than seven or eight hours, pay the day rate upfront. It's cheaper and saves you from having to extend mid-session.

Maximum continuous stay is 24 hours.

Multi-storey car parks

The ITC operates seven public multi-storey buildings in Abu Dhabi, holding about 3,788 spaces combined. One subscription covers all seven. Worth it if you park daily in an area where street bays are always full by the time you arrive.

Residential parking zones

These zones follow different rules from Premium and Standard parking.

Villa Residents Parking covers subsidiary lots in residential areas, marked with turquoise lines or signs saying "For Villa Residents Only." Residents can use nearby paid bays within the same sector for free for the full day.

Guests of villa residents need a visitor permit to park in these spaces. Vehicles parked correctly here won't get a fine before 2:00 AM. Villa owners apply for the permit via SMS from their registered number — up to four numbers can be saved on the account. Each permit is valid for 4 hours and can only be activated between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM.

Free parking days in Abu Dhabi

This is where people get caught out. "Is it free on Fridays?" is one of the most searched parking questions in Abu Dhabi — and the answer is not the same for both zone types.

Monday through Saturday are all paid days for both zone types, 8 AM to midnight. Sunday is the only free day. Public holidays are also free. Friday is not exempt — if you park on a Friday morning on Hamdan Street, you owe AED 3 an hour the same as any other weekday.

During major events — Formula 1 at Yas Island, National Day, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix — authorities sometimes activate paid parking in normally free zones, especially around Yas Island. Check the Darb app or ITC announcements before any big event day. Don't find out the hard way.

Public holidays where free parking applies:

How to pay for Mawaqif parking via SMS

Text 3009 from a Du or Etisalat SIM. No registration required. Whether you've done it a hundred times or never before, it works the same way.

The SMS format

[City Code + Plate Category] [Plate Number] [S or P] [Hours]

City Code + Plate Category is your emirate code with your plate's letter category attached. Abu Dhabi plate, category 5: AUH5. Dubai plate, category A: DXBA.

S = Standard. P = Premium.

1. Open your SMS app and address it to 3009.
2. Type the message in the format above.
3. Send it.
4. A confirmation SMS comes back with zone, duration, and expiry time. That's your ticket.
5. Keep it until you're back at the car.

If the confirmation SMS doesn't come

Don't assume it went through. No confirmation means no valid ticket. You can be fined.

Most failures come down to format errors: wrong spacing, wrong code, plate number entered incorrectly. Fix the message and resend. If it fails again, walk to the nearest Pay & Display machine or open Darb. Parking without a confirmed ticket is treated the same as parking without any payment at all.

How to extend your Mawaqif parking session

Mawaqif sends a reminder SMS 10 minutes before your session runs out. To add time, text E to 3009. That opens a new session for the same duration at the same rate.

Standard zones: you can keep extending, up to the 24-hour ceiling.

Premium zones: 4-hour hard limit. Once you've hit it, extensions won't go through. You need to move.

Make sure there's enough balance on the account before extending, or the request will fail silently.

Mawaqif payment methods

Darb app

Darb is the ITC's official parking app, available on iOS and Android. You can pay for parking, find available bays nearby, check your session history, set expiry alerts, and pay fines — all in one place. Registered users pay from an e-wallet. Unregistered users enter their details each session. Search "Darb" on the App Store or Google Play.

Pay & Display machines

Turquoise machines next to parking zones across the city. Cash and cards accepted. They print a paper ticket to leave on the dashboard. These are the reliable backup when SMS fails.

Rechargeable parking cards

Cards cost AED 50 at Mawaqif Customer Service Centres, with AED 50 credit loaded on activation.

Residential parking permits

If you live in Abu Dhabi and park near home every day, the residential permit is worth getting. It covers parking in designated resident bays between 9:00 PM and 8:00 AM. Apply at itc.gov.ae or any Customer Service Centre.

Permitted bays are marked with turquoise lines or "Resident Permit Only" signs.

How to apply

Bring proof of residency — a tenancy contract or title deed — plus your vehicle registration. Pay the fee if applicable. The permit links to your plate digitally once processed.

Monthly and annual permits for public zones

If you pay for parking in public zones every working day, do the math on an annual permit. At AED 4,695 a year, it works out to about AED 391 per month — and it covers both Standard and Premium zones.

Long-term

Picking someone up? Time it within the first 15 minutes (AED 15) by calling ahead before they clear customs. Waiting in short-term parking for 45 minutes costs more than three times that.

Mawaqif parking fines and violations

There's a 10-minute grace period before a fine gets issued. After that, inspectors can write a notice. Fines go from AED 100 to AED 1,000.

Unpaid fines accumulate against your vehicle registration and will block renewal.

Paying a fine

Online at tamm.abudhabi with UAE Pass — 25% off if you pay within 30 days. Same discount through Darb. In person at a Customer Service Centre or Abu Dhabi Police station.

Disputing a fine

Call 800-3009 or visit a Customer Service Centre. Bring your confirmation SMS and any supporting evidence. Disputes must be raised within 60 days of the violation.

Special parking situations

Electric vehicles

Some Mawaqif zones have EV charging bays, mostly in commercial areas and multi-storey car parks. Free parking for EVs is not a blanket rule. Before assuming an EV bay is free to park in, check the Darb app for current locations and any active exemptions in your area.

Valet parking

Most major hotels, upscale restaurants, and shopping centres in Abu Dhabi offer valet. Yas Mall, Marina Mall, and the Corniche hotels all have it. Typical cost: AED 15–25 per session. Some venues include it with dining or entry.

Park and ride

Abu Dhabi has park-and-ride spots on the city's outskirts where you can leave the car and take a bus or taxi in. On big event weekends, central parking fills hours before anything starts — on those days it's usually the practical choice. The Darb app shows current park-and-ride locations.

How to avoid getting a fine

Check the kerbstone colour. White and blue: Premium, AED 3/hour, 4-hour limit. Black and blue: Standard, AED 2/hour or AED 15/day. Do this before anything else.

Read the signs close to the bay, not just the one on the main road. Exceptions — reserved zones, school hours, temporary event closures — get posted at the spot itself.

Send the SMS from the bay, not ten minutes after you've walked away. Wait for the confirmation before leaving.

Keep enough mobile balance. A drained prepaid SIM mid-session means no reminder and no extension. The fine arrives without warning.

Set up DARB before you need it. Registering while your time is ticking down is stressful and unnecessary.

On event days — Formula 1, National Day, Grand Prix — check ITC announcements. Normal free-day rules can be suspended.

Pay the AED 15/day rate upfront for long stays in Standard zones. If you're parking for more than 7–8 hours, you'll spend more paying by the hour.

Keep the confirmation SMS until you're back in the car. Inspectors can ask for it.

Honestly, Mawaqif is not the nightmare it looks like from the outside. Once you've done it a couple of times — checked the kerbstone, sent the SMS, got the confirmation back — it becomes second nature.

The Friday thing catches people out more than anything else. A lot of drivers, including long-term residents, assume it's free like Sunday. It's not. Park on a Friday without paying and you'll find out the hard way.

If you're in Abu Dhabi long-term, the residential permit and the annual public zone pass are both worth the 10 minutes it takes to apply. The math works in your favour pretty quickly. And if you're going to the airport, remember the SMS option doesn't work there — bring a card for the Pay & Display machine.
