A UAE number plate tells you more than most people notice. The color shows what the vehicle is used for. The letter — in Dubai — shows which registration batch it came from. And the number itself, if it's short enough, could be worth more than the car it's bolted to.

UAE plates use two parallel systems. Color identifies vehicle purpose — white for private cars, yellow for taxis and rentals, green for commercial vehicles, red for temporary registration, blue for government, and black/diplomatic for embassies. Types of number plates in UAE: color guide
Plate color follows a consistent logic across all seven emirates. The RTA in Dubai and equivalent authorities elsewhere apply the same rules.
White plates — private vehicles
White plates with black lettering are on roughly 90% of vehicles registered in the UAE. Every privately owned car, SUV, and motorcycle gets one. In Dubai, white plates carry a letter code (A through Z, then AA, BB, and onwards) followed by up to five digits.

Yellow plates — taxis and rental vehicles
Yellow covers two categories: licensed taxis (operated by RTA-approved companies) and rental or leased vehicles driven by multiple users over short periods.
The color matters beyond appearances. Insurers and traffic police treat yellow-plate vehicles differently from private cars, because the usage terms and liability exposure are different. If you're renting a car in Dubai, it'll have a yellow plate.
Green number plate in UAE — commercial vehicles
Green plates are for commercial use: delivery vans, logistics trucks, buses, and any vehicle operating under a business license.
EV owners often ask whether the green parking bays and EV promotions translate to a dedicated green plate. As of 2026, they don't. Dubai has rolled out green-marked EV parking zones and free SALIK tags for electric vehicles, but the green plate color still means commercial. An electric delivery van gets a green plate for the same reason a diesel one does — it's the vehicle's purpose, not its engine, that determines the color.
Red number plate in Dubai — temporary registration
Red plates in Dubai indicate temporary registration. A new car leaving a dealership typically gets a red plate while the RTA finalizes permanent registration — usually valid for around 30 days.
In some contexts red also signals a commercial vehicle classification. But most of the time you see one, it's on a recently purchased vehicle still working through paperwork.
If a vehicle has been carrying a red plate for more than a few weeks, registration is probably incomplete — which can create problems with car insurance validity too.
Blue plates — government vehicles
Blue plates are for government vehicles: ministries, public sector departments, and official state entities.
Black and diplomatic plates
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues these for embassies and consular missions accredited to the UAE. They include embassy codes and carry permissions that standard plates don't.

Color aside, the RTA offers five physical plate formats. You choose one when registering or personalizing a vehicle.

On top of the plate fee: AED 50 for a new ownership certificate, AED 10 for an expiry sticker, and AED 20 in Knowledge and Innovation fees on every transaction.
Plate code Dubai: what the letter actually means
Every Dubai private plate has a letter before the number. That letter has nothing to do with vehicle type. It's the registration batch — when all numbers under A were assigned, the RTA opened B, then C, and so on.
This matters for price. Earlier codes (A, B, C, D) are scarcer, and scarcity in the plate market means real money.

The letter O is excluded to avoid confusion with zero. That gives Dubai 25 active single-letter codes.
Standard format: [Letter Code] [Up to 5 digits] — for example, D 5678 or AA 12345. The Dubai logo appears on the plate, and the combination is registered to one specific vehicle in the RTA database.
Abu Dhabi plate category meaning
Abu Dhabi works completely differently from Dubai. Instead of letter codes, plates use numeric categories from 1 to 50.
Categories 1 through 10 are the rarest. Category 1 is linked to UAE leadership. Categories 11 to 30 were issued during Abu Dhabi's growth period. Categories 31 to 50 are the most recently issued and the most common on the road.
An Abu Dhabi plate reads: [Category Number] – [Plate Number] Example: 2 – 789
Lower category numbers mean fewer total plates were ever issued in that series. Fewer plates means higher prices. Plate number "1" in Abu Dhabi sold for AED 52.2 million at auction in 2008 — still the global record for a license plate.
Abu Dhabi uses numbers 1 to 50. Dubai uses letters A through Z (then AA, BB, CC). The two formats look nothing alike once you know what you're reading.
UAE number plate value check: estimating what a plate is worth
Plate prices follow a logic. Five variables determine what any plate is worth before you bid.
- Emirate — Dubai plates command the highest prices. The secondary market is deeper and the buyer pool wealthier than anywhere else in the UAE.
- Code letter — earlier codes (A, B, C) are worth 5 to 10 times more than later codes (X, Y, Z) for the exact same number.
- Digit count — fewer digits means fewer plates ever existed. There are only 9 possible single-digit plates per code.
- Number pattern — repeating numbers (1111, 9999), sequences (1234), and culturally significant dates (1971, 0707) trade at a premium.
- Cultural significance — UAE National Day references and palindromes attract consistent demand at auction.

Going from five digits to four roughly doubles the price. From four to three multiplies it by 3 to 5 times. From three to two can multiply it by 10. Single-digit plates exist in their own category — prices there are set by auction dynamics and personal conviction.

One thing worth knowing: RTA auction prices include 5% VAT. Private market listings don't. Subtract 5% from auction results before comparing them to open-market prices.
RTA plate number search: how to find and reserve a special plate
The RTA's 'Enquire About Special Plate Numbers' service lets you search the database for available plates at no charge.
Step 1 — Go to rta.ae or open the Dubai Drive app. The service is also available in person at RTA Customer Happiness Centres and approved vehicle registration centres.
Step 2 — Log in with UAE Pass or your existing RTA account.
Step 3 — Enter the plate category (private, commercial, etc.), the code letter, the number of digits (1 to 5), and the specific number you want.
Step 4 — The system returns one of two results: "Available for Buying" (you can proceed to purchase) or "Not Available" (already registered). If available, the price appears on the same screen.
Step 5 — Standard plates can be bought directly through the portal. Special or exclusive plates go to RTA auction — online or in-person. Participating in an auction requires a security deposit of AED 5,000 and a registration fee of AED 120. You settle the winning bid within 10 days.
How to buy a number plate in Dubai: new vs. used cars
New car registration
For a new car, the dealership usually handles RTA registration as part of the sale — they submit the paperwork and fit the plate. If you want a personalized plate instead, sort that through the RTA portal before registration closes.
Used car registration
For used vehicles, registration is the buyer's responsibility:
- Complete vehicle inspection and ownership transfer
- Submit required documents to the RTA
- Pay registration and transfer fees
- Surrender the old plate
- Register and install the new plate
The previous owner's personalized plate doesn't transfer to you automatically. If a used car comes with a plate you want to keep, that's a separate negotiation with the seller and a separate process through the RTA.
