Quick Answer
Six ways to check your Salik balance in Dubai: the Smart Salik App, salik.ae, the RTA website, kiosks around the city, the call center at 800 72545, or SMS to 5959. None require a trip to an RTA office.
Pass through a gate on zero balance and you have 5 working days to top up. After that, it's an AED 100 fine — and it goes up from there.

What is Salik?
Salik is Dubai's toll system — no booths, no slowing down. It launched in 2007 and is run by the Roads and Transport Authority. A small RFID tag sits on your windshield and links to a prepaid account. Each gate pass costs AED 4, deducted automatically.
There are 8 active gates in Dubai:
- Al Maktoum Bridge (Umm Hurair Road)
- Al Garhoud Bridge (Sheikh Rashid Road)
- Al Mamzar North (Al Ittihad Road)
- Al Mamzar South (Al Ittihad Road)
- Al Safa (Sheikh Zayed Road)
- Al Barsha (Sheikh Zayed Road)
- Airport Tunnel (Beirut Street)
- Jebel Ali (Sheikh Zayed Road)
All run 24 hours, every day.
Method 1: Smart Salik App
Most people use this. Download it, log in, tap "Check My Balance." It also handles recharges and shows your full toll history — useful if you want to see how fast your balance is moving.
- Open the app and log in with your account number and PIN. First time? Register from the same screen.
- Tap "Check My Balance" on the home screen.
- Your balance and recent transactions show up immediately.
Method 2: Salik website
If you have an account
- Go to salik.ae.
- Click "Login" and enter your account number and PIN.
- Your balance is on the dashboard.
No account? You can still check
Salik lets you look up a balance with just your mobile number and plate — no login, no registration needed.
- Go to salik.ae.
- Click "Check My Balance" in the top-right corner.
- Enter your registered mobile number (drop the leading zero).
- Select your emirate (e.g., Dubai).

Method 4: Salik kiosks
Kiosks are at petrol stations and RTA service centers across Dubai. Good if you want to check and top up in one stop, or if you prefer cash.
- Tap the screen to pick your language.
- Select "Check Salik Balance."
- Enter your account number and PIN.
- Your balance shows on screen.
Cash and card both work for top-ups at kiosks.
Method 5: Call center (800 72545)
24/7, Arabic and English.
- Dial 800 72545 (or 800 SALIK) from any UAE phone.
- Press 1 for Arabic, 2 for English.

Method 6: SMS to 5959
Useful when you have no data connection.

- Type: SALIK [account number] [PIN] — for example: SALIK 12345 6789
- Send to 5959.
- A reply comes back within a few minutes with your current balance.
How to activate a new Salik card
New card needs activating before it works. You'll need:
- Salik card number (on the back of the card)
- Your UAE mobile number
- Traffic file number (on your vehicle registration)
Steps:
- Go to salik.ae.
- Go to Salik Services, then select "Activate Salik Card."
- Enter card number, traffic file number, and personal details.
- Add your vehicle details.
- Enter the verification code sent to your mobile.
- Upload the required documents and confirm.
How to recharge your Salik balance
Top-up options:
- Smart Salik App — credit card or 12-digit recharge card number
- salik.ae — via MyTag > Recharge, credit card, multiples of AED 50
- SMS to 5959 — type R [recharge card number] [account number] [PIN]
- Call center 800 72545 — recharge card only
- Salik kiosks — cash or card
- Banks and ATMs at partner institutions
- Dubai Now app or RTA app
Minimum: AED 50. Maximum: AED 50,000 per transaction. Has to be a multiple of 50.
What happens if your balance hits zero
Pass through a gate with no balance and you get a 5-working-day window to fix it. After that:
- First offence: AED 100
- Second: AED 200
- Each one after that: AED 400
Per vehicle. The fine stacks quickly if you commute on gated roads and don't notice.
Turning on low-balance alerts in the app (set at AED 50) is the easiest way to avoid this. You get a notification before the problem, not after.
A note on staying topped up
Two gates a day — pretty normal on Sheikh Zayed Road — costs AED 8. AED 50 lasts about six days of that. It adds up, and it's easy to lose track. Set the low-balance alert in the app; 30 seconds now, no AED 100 fine later.
